Volunteer Work - charity based work options

There are many charities and organisations that need volunteers in New Zealand. You could work in a charity job (they always look for help), like a bird rescue shop, a Red Cross shop, a Cancer awareness shop or for the Salvation Army. Then there are organisations like the Department of Conservation. They often look for volunteers for a day to go to places and clean them up and maintain the track systems (the DoC is responsible for many of the hiking paths in New Zealand). Sometimes there are also opportunities to volunteer as a hut warden. There is a lot of volunteer work in New Zealand, and just volunteering every now and then will definitely be a good way to see a different side of the country than just the typical tourist side.
