Gisborne is the first city in New Zealand to see the rising sun, and thus it is a very popular place ot be for New Year's celebrations. Gisborne has a fantastic botanical garden, and a very vibrant Maori community (forget touristy Rotorua). If you are lucky, you might even watch a Kapahaka competition (often only NZ$5 entry fee – a lot cheaper than a dance show in Rotorua). Cedenco and LeaderBrand Produce are employers that are quite popular for seasonal work (vegetables). If you don't want to work outdoors, you can also find a variety of jobs in the hospitality sector as Gisborne is a popular destination for tourists, and also has many bars, restaurants and cafes.
