Backpacker Jobs in South Island, NZ

Sensational South Island

Ski the South Island

There are a number of different ski resort options if you're heading to the South Island for the winter season.

Ski it up in Porters, or Coronet Peak is a great spot for beginner skiers as the slopes aren't too high.

For the more experienced, Treble Cone near Wanaka is good for the advanced skier or snowboarder.

With fresh snow comes the crowds, which is perfect if you're looking for an au pair role. Many parents love to leave the kids with something fun to do while they hit the slopes, and you're bound to find babysitters are in demand during the winter season in these areas.

Christchurch

Christchurch is one of the most picturesque cities in the world, and a trip to this South Island hot spot will not disappoint.

Take in the views on a Christchurch gondola ride, go punting on the Avon River, explore the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, or have a picnic in Mona Vale park.

If you'd like to settle in the city for a while, there are a number of different office administration jobs that often need filling. Take a few months to work and explore Christchurch and you won't be disappointed.

Canterbury

The region that surrounds Christchurch looks like something out of a film with its rolling grassy plains, crystal clear lakes and white-topped snowy mountains. Home to the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, which houses the country's tallest mountain, as well as the spectacular Tasman Glacier, which is 27km long, there is a plethora of things for the adrenalin-junkie backpacker to do.

After the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, this part of the country is still re-building. This means labouring jobs aren't too hard to come by, so if you're looking for construction work on your backpacking holiday, this could be a good place to base yourself.

Stewart Island, Southland

Technically not on the South Island but 30km south of the South Island, Stewart Island is home to less than 400 people. A stunning place to visit, although it can get windy, Stewart Island is a fishing hotspot.

Fishing off the bays and coves of this island you will find blue cod, grouper and trumpeter fish. Being a popular fishing location, if you take a jaunt to this magical place you might be lucky enough to find a fishing job to keep you busy through the fishing season.

And there you have it – some of the best places to explore on New Zealand's north and south islands, and the jobs to do to help you fund your next adventure.
