1. Mt Hutt
If you’re looking to work for a large resort, this the place to go. It’s the biggest one you’ll find in Canterbury.
Its size isn’t all this resort has going for it. There are plenty of amenities to enjoy when you’re off the clock.
Have you been skiing before? If not, that’s perfectly fine. Mt Hutt offers beginner terrain, as well as areas for more experienced visitors.
If you’re well-versed in traversing the powder, you’ll love the backcountry riding that Mt Hutt offers.
The location of this resort is ideal if you’d still like a taste of regular living. It’s close to Methven, a nice town that offers a perfectly chill vibe. It also offers cheaper prices than you can find in better-known areas.
2. Broken River
This club resort is located in Canterbury and runs as a non-profit business. This means the people who visit and ski there are essentially a familiar community.
You can become part of that community, even if temporarily, by working the ski season there. You’ll have to put your best foot forward, though. Very few people are employed there each season.
Keep in mind, if you’d like to work at Broken River, you’ll need to be able to get yourself there. Public transportation doesn’t run to this private field.
If you do get to work here, you’ll likely see some great skiers. This resort is all about the tougher skiing in the backcountry.
You’ll want to make sure you’re in shape. You’ll likely spend a lot of time hiking around looking for great places for people to ski.
3. Whakapapa/Turoa
Working here isn’t for the faint of heart. These twin resorts are located on an active volcano. They provide some seriously great skiing opportunities, though.
The type of skiing offered here is unlike what you’ll find at many other resorts. Instead of darting in between trees, you won’t have to worry about trees at all. Instead, skiing only happens above the tree line.
The skiing offered here for the experienced rider, though. Drop-offs and occasional severe weather make it a great option for those who know how to handle Mother Nature’s more advanced offerings.
Whether you’re working or off the clock, you’ll likely enjoy your time in the area. The people are friendly and you’ll find awesome events to attend.
4. Treble Cone
Treble Cone is located on South Island, and you’ll love the views it provides. The resort sits among the Southern Alps and looks over Lake Wanaka.
You’ll be a little out of the way, but if you do want to party, Queenstown is 90 kilometers from there. Wanaka is closer, at only 26 kilometers away.
You’ll want to be a pretty good rider to work at this resort. The inclines you’ll find at Treble Cone are some of the steepest you’ll find in the country.
There’s not a lot of local life, but you’ll have access to some great skiing. You’ll likely live in Wanaka, so make sure you have a way to get to resort each day.
5. Coronet Peak and The Remarkables
If you’re looking to work for an extremely popular resort where you’ll see all sorts of ski-loving life, Queenstown is the place. Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are both located nearby.
While these are two separate resorts, they’re knit together by Queenstown at the base.
The town is where all the non-skiing action happens. The resorts offer great winter recreation but don’t focus on offering many services.
These two resorts are operated by the same company who operates Mt Hutt, so if you work for one of them, you’ll have access to all.
Are you a beginner, or looking for work with families and new skiers? The Remarkables is the place for you.
If you’re looking for something more rugged and thrilling, look for a job at Coronet Peak. You’ll want to look at options in areas other than Queenstown, though, if you don’t like the party atmosphere.
6. Temple Basin
Temple Basin is all about natural skiing adventures. The area is ungroomed, providing great, naturally-created skiing terrain.
This resort requires membership, so you may not see as many skiers as you’d see at public resorts. You’ll still be in for a great work experience, though.
You’ll be able to spot glaciers while you work, and you’ll see all types of ski terrain. Temple Basin is known for being steep and rugged, but it offers fun for skiers of all levels.
